Our three kids ranging from 18 months to 6 years old (girl, boy, girl) all share our upstairs hallway bathroom. And although, we designed this bathroom when there were only two–it still functions well for three (and will for our fourth child due this summer!) Using a gender-neutral nautical theme for the kids’ bathroom, allowed us to accommodate the shared girls/ boys bathroom for the future. Nobody can say it’s too girly or too boyish!
Like most parents, we didn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a kids bathroom renovation–not before we do our kitchen or our own master bathroom! So we did our kids bathroom makeover on a small budget–$400. And because we only had to change the aesthetic portions of the bathroom (it functioned fine before.)

The two big projects we did was to install DIY Board and Batten and to Paint the Bathroom Cabinets. Doing these two things transformed the room for a small amount of money, and let me spend a little more on accessories–like bath mats, shower curtains, and cute bath decor. We’ve also installed beadboard in our downstairs bathroom which would also work well for a kids bath!

KIDS BATHROOM MATS
Bathroom mats are a great way to add some playfulness to a regular bathroom–and an inexpensive way to add some color. Do you think if I upgrade mine to one of these my kids will stop splashing in the bathtub so much? 😉
KIDS BATHROOM SHOWER CURTAINS
We love our nautical kids’ bathroom shower curtains from Serena & LilySerena & Lily; but, they are sadly no longer available. Here are some fun ones that I love that are currently available from other retailers. Remember, you can always easily change out your shower curtain down the line and put in something more refined!
KIDS BATHROOM ACCESSORIES
Kids bathroom accessories are where you can really have some fun! I figure if my kids’ toothbrushes are always going to be out, I may as well have something cute to put them in. Now if only I could get them to neatly use toothpaste 😉
KIDS BATHROOM ART
There’s no reason to not have artwork in your kids’ bathroom–but I would recommend using prints that are protected by glass! I like using inexpensive Ikea frames in our bathrooms to display artwork.

KIDS BATHROOM THEMES
Off the top of my head, there are lots of themes you can do with a kids’ bathroom. While some are gender specific, many can be used by girls or boys! Here are my favorite kids bathroom ideas:
- Mermaid Theme
- Nautical or Coastal Theme
- Splish Splash Bath
- Little Duckies Theme (think lots of tasteful ducks all in a row!)
- Alligator
- Dinosaur
- Pirates
- Rainbow (I recommend using muted pastels instead of full-on colors)
