This is my first One Room Challenge, and I am thrilled and to be honest, very nervous to be part of it! You see six weeks isn’t that long, really, and when you add in everything else in our life, I know it is going to be a push! But I am excited to have a little fire burning and a huge motivation to get this room done so we can enjoy it everyday!
Ever since we moved into this house, this bathroom has been slotted for a big cosmetic overhaul. What we have going on is a whole lot of BROWN BROWN BROWN. Brown walls, brown cabinets, brown granite, and brown fixtures. So the first thing I want to do is lighten everything up by painting all of the trim white, and the walls an off-white. This won’t be my first time painting over oak trim, and I know will not be my last! But, I am excited to tackle painting cabinets, which I haven’t done before.
So without further delay, here are the before (and current status) of the bathroom. It is the kids’ bathroom on our second floor and is only used by the kids and our guests. It is a pretty large bathroom that is broken into two parts (originally, there was a door separating the two sections; and with a toddler, we saw that as just one more opportunity to get her fingers caught, so we took it out right away when we moved in.
Don’t mind my little photobomber (my 11 month old son!)
And on your way out, you see this.
So now for the fun part, my inspiration…

I absolutely love this bathroom featuring Katie Ridder’s wallpaper. I have had it pinned for almost five years now! The white subway tile, the white cabinetry, the roman shades, and of course the Leontine linens are all amazing. Well, news flash! None of that is going to happen in this room. But, I do plan on taking some of the design cues and putting my own budget-friendly spin on it. You can see the aesthetic I am going for more in the photos below…

KIDS BATH PLANS
1.) First things first, I want to paint the room. All of the cabinets and woodwork will go Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I am going to paint the oak trim in white semi-gloss like I did here. And I plan on using Benjamin Moore’s Advance paint for the cabinets (I also used it here and here to paint furniture.) This will make a huge difference in here and really brighten things up!
2.) I will make a faux roman shade using some look-for-less fabric. We already have blinds in there so I am planning on just going over the blinds since the roman shade is not really going to work. It is just for aesthetics!
3.) We will replace the light fixtures in the room and strike a balance between using what we have inherited, and buying some nautical light fixtures new. We will keep all of the faucets, countertops, and other components the same to keep it budget-friendly.
4.) We will replace the shower curtain with something that is reminiscent of Katie Ridder’s amazing Beetlecat wallpaper but doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. The current one is really cute and totally acceptable; but, the new one will be a bit more fun for a kids’ bathroom! If you follow me on Facebook, you might already know 😉
5.) We will create a new frame for the mirror. The current mirror’s frame is a little cheap looking and hopefully, my handy husband will be able to come up with a nicer frame for it that is more substantial. He has made frames for our artwork downstairs, so I don’t think making one for this will be too hard.
6.) And maybe, if we are incredibly lucky (and I convince E) add some beadboard! This will have to happen before we paint, so I am not sure if it will or not, seeing as we are going to be very busy anyhow the next several weeks!
I can’t wait to check in with you all next week and share my progress! Check out all the others participants here! Make sure to check out all of the One Room Challenge Guest Participants at Calling it Home! And if you want to see behind-the-scenes make sure to follow me!

I have this conversation with Mark on a daily basis about how much painting a room and accents white, how much it helps with lightening a space. He loves dark cabinets and kitchens, all it does is make it look smaller and like a bachelor pad. I pray whatever house we buy has white everything so I won’t have the battle lol. Looks like there is great space in this bathroom to start off with!

Ah. I can totally understand what you’re saying about all the brown. I’m surrounded by it and it kills me. I can’t wait to move so I can lighten things up!

Can’t wait to see how this turns out!! Sure to be quite the transformation. We have contractors starting our shower renovation on Monday and I’m not looking forward to the mess but totally can’t wait of the finished result. It’s been a long time coming…we added granite and painted cabinets a year ago but I’ve been patiently waiting for this big chunk.

I’m so excited to see your progress; I absolutely love your pin-spiration. In my future next house, I pretty much want everything white, so I’m looking forward to seeing how yours turn out.
