SHERWIN-WILLIAMS NAVAL
Jump ahead to...
Naval is one of Sherwin-Williams most popular dark blue paint colors (see the best navy blue paint colors here) for good reason–it is a fabulous true navy that is versatile. It can be used in general living spaces like kitchens, front doors, and bedrooms as well as nurseries! The thing that sets it apart is how much gray it has. The undertones in SW Naval are varied enough to give it sophistication! See how it compares to Benjamin Moore’s most popular navy blue, Hale Navy, and which I would recommend for what uses!

SW NAVAL LRV:
What does LRV even mean? LRV stands for the light reflectance value of a paint–basically how much light does a paint reflect. The lower the number, the darker the paint. SW Naval has a LRV of 4, which means it is a very dark color. That isn’t to say you shouldn’t use it though! Dark and dramatic paint colors look fantastic as accents or in rooms that you want to feel cozy!
How many times have you forgotten a paint chip at the paint store? Save yourself time and understand the colors you are using in your home better with these–plus they’re available with free shipping!
Does SW Naval look good with wood and natural tones?
Yes! Sherwin-Williams Naval looks wonderful with natural wood tones and elements–think of a classic boat–lots of wood tones and dark navy blue colors.
SHERWIN-WILLIAMS NAVAL CABINETS
One of the most popular ways to use SW Naval is on kitchen cabinets, kitchen islands, and cabinets in laundry rooms and bathrooms. Why? Because SW Naval is an excellent accent color. It looks fantastic with whites and wood tones. See how fantastic it looks below in this drop dead kitchen by Dina Holland Interiors!

What kind of paint should you use for SW Naval Cabinets?
See what kitchen cabinet paint I recommend here (and why), but short answer–use their interior latex alkyd from Sherwin-Williams. It is a specially designed cabinet paint that is self-leveling and will stand up to the daily abuse most kitchen cabinets withstand!
You can see how SW Naval looks amazing with gold accents and with polished nickel and/ or chrome accents in the kitchen to the right. The bright white countertops, walls, and upper cabinets provide a stark contrast to the dark navy SW Naval painted lowers, and it looks sharp!
Here it is again in a kitchen that SW highlighted to announce it’s color of the year. Using gold accents is a lovely touch, and gives it a slight glam nod, while maintaining a nice modern aeesthetic. The light floors look wonderful against the dark kitchen island!
Again, Dina Holland nails it with SW Naval cabinets–see how amazing it looks on the other side of her Project Washington Avenue kitchen in the butler’s pantry (see more here).

And above, you can see how good it looks in a coastal laundry room. It looks equally as good with polished nicken hardware as it does with aged brass or gold hardware!
SW NAVAL SW 6244 UNDERTONES
It’s easiest to understand how a paint behaves by examining similar colors, and colors that are on the same color strip. See below how, SW is quite a dark color, and is a true navy blue. It doesn’t have many green or purple undertones. If you’re looking for a good true navy blue, then choose SW Naval.

Sherwin-Williams Naval vs. Anchors Aweigh

SW Naval vs. SW Salty Dog

SW Naval vs. SW Dress Blues
- Comments: We contemplated painting our front door Naval, and it ultimately came down between Naval and Dress Blues. We ended up going with Dress Blues because it has more blue in it, and isn’t as dark. In the bright South light of our front door, the Naval read more black/ gray at a distance neck to the stark white siding. Whereas, Dress Blues is definitively blue.
- LRV:
- Sherwin-Williams Naval LRV= 4
- Benjamin Moore Dress Blues LRV= 5
SHERWIN-WILLIAMS NAVAL FRONT DOOR
See how lovely On Sutton’s Place SW Naval front door looks with holiday decor. SW Naval is a fantastic exterior color and looks equally as good on front doors as it does on exterior walls. We opted to paint our front door SW Dress Blues because it read better in our South-West bright sunny location. Navy blues do fade, so keep that in mind, when you are painting a full-sun location. But for me, that’s not a reason not to paint the door the color I want! I just repaint it every few years.
